TECNALIA Research and Innovation

TECNALIA RESEARCH & INNOVATION is a private, independent, non-profit applied research center of international excellence. Legally a foundation, Tecnalia is the leading private and independent research and technology organisation in Spain and one of the largest in Europe, employing around 1,300 people (280 PhDs) and with an income of 108 Million € in 2019.

The whole team at TECNALIA has one goal: to transform technology into GDP, meaning wealth to improve people’s quality of life through generation of business opportunities for industry. TECNALIA is committed to generate major impacts in economic terms, by means of innovation and technological development, addressed by 6 business divisions covering the economic sectors of Energy, Environment, Industry, Transport, Construction, Health and ICT. TECNALIA is a key agent in the ERA - European Research Area - and actively participates in the governing bodies of several European Technology Platforms, PPPs and JTIs (EEB, FOF, SPIRE, ARTEMIS…). In H2020 activity TECNALIA participates in 341 projects, coordinating 68 of them, up to the end of December 2020 (EC data). TECNALIA is a member of EARTO and of EUROTECH, linking together the most important RTOs in Europe.

The TECNALIA research groups participating in ENLIGHTENME belong to the Department of Building Technologies Division. This division covers the whole value chain of the construction sector, from materials building and products to the buildings themselves, the city and the civil infrastructures.

In line with its commitment with the European industry, Building Technologies division is an active member of the main European technological platforms and associations, as the European Construction Technology Platform (ECTP) and the linked Public Private Partnership in Energy-efficient Buildings (PPP EeB), JPI Cultural Heritage and Global Change: A New Challenge for Europe, International Energy Agency (IEA) , Deputy of the Spanish Government in the Energy in Buildings and Communities Programme (EBC); Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL), Home Automation And Smart Cities Platform (SmartLivingPlat), EERA JP Smart Cities, Spanish Construction Technology Platform (PTEC),Basque Country Construction Cluster (ERAIKUNE) and Spanish Cluster of Home Automation and Smart Cities (DOMOTYS) among others.

Role of the institution within ENLIGHTENme

TECNALIA is the work package 1 leader. TECNALIA participates in the project providing its competences in geospatial data models and systems, 3D city models and decision-making processes for improving liveability of urban environments. RTD activities will exploit TECNALIA expertise on 3D Urban data models and web-based Geospatial Visualisation. TECNALIA will also contribute to:

  • Work package 2: providing support on the analysis of cost effectiveness of the interventions.
  • Work package 4: for the development of a decision support system for healthy urban lighting policies.
  • Work package 6: TECNALIA will also play a significant role in the dissemination and exploitation of project results.
