City of Bologna recognised for their urban lighting at LUCI Cities & Lighting Awards 2024

ENLIGHTENme project partner LUCI Association, the international network of cities on urban lighting, hosts its Cities & Lighting Awards Ceremony biennially. The 2024 edition will be held on the 5th of December alongside the Lyon Light Festival Forum.

The Lyon Light Festival Forum brings together international city delegations and representatives, light artists, light festival organisers and lighting manufacturers to focus on a specific aspect of creative lighting while experiencing the world-renowned Fête des Lumières.

We are delighted to announce that ENLIGHTENme partner, the City of Bologna has won the 3rd prize in the LUCI Cities & Lighting Awards 2024 for their lighting project on the city arcades and selected buildings in the historic city centre. We extent our sincere congratulations.

The project enhances the accessibility and safety of urban spaces, making them liveable and welcoming even in the evening and improving visual comfort throughout the historic centre. By ensuring adequate light levels in compliance with European technical standards, the new lighting thus enhances the safety and wellbeing of citizens. Since 2022, the city has also been part of a significant European Project involving several universities to improve citizens' health and wellbeing through proper and mindful public lighting. This project explores the correlation between health, wellbeing, lighting, and socio-economic factors, particularly in elderly populations, aiming to develop evidence-based guidelines and innovative policies. These are intended to define measures, technologies, and interventions that can assist both citizens and city leaders in enhancing public health and wellbeing.

Tailored to cities and local authorities, the LUCI Cities & Lighting Awards put the spotlight on high impact urban lighting projects that go beyond illumination. The 2024 edition of the award continues to celebrate cities that have realised urban lighting projects that aim to improve sustainability and quality of life of citizens, in the spirit of the LUCI Declaration for the Future of Urban Lighting. The City of Bologna will be represented in Lyon by the councillor for public works Mr Borsari together with Mr Rubini to accept the prize. The full list of winners can be found here.
